Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My father in law is in much pain. Source unable to be identified, he is 88. He has been given morphine and methadone, to control the pain. Was able to stay at home for awhile, with home health coming in evenings. Now he is in the hospital, is refusing pain medicine and becoming combative. Doctors are deciding to induce a coma. Why? Will this prolong his life? He has a do not resuscitate order . He just wants to die. Family does not want to see him in pain.

General & Family Physician, Dr. Amarnath's Response
welcome to hcm, If he is in hospital pain can be managed by putting iv injections or intra muscular injections if he is avoiding oral pain medications. if the source of pain is known the cause of the pain can be treated which will be better than giving injections or tablets for pain. i want him to be fully evaluated to know the cause and source of his pain and treat accordingly. managing the pain at this age will surely improve his present status hope this explains with regards Dr.Amarnath
