Suggest Treatment For Chronic Sinusitis And Diarrhea While On Amoxicillin
My 98 yearold mother is on amoxicillin - 500mg 4x day for respiratory infection. She has severe chronic sinusitis and it rarely goes to her lungs. She has had a bit of diarrhea but not constant. She is drinking Gatorade, taking probiotics, and we are trying to monitor her foods - yogurt, applesauce, banana etc. any suggestions for other foods.
Welcome and thanks for your query. Diarrhoea is a common side effect of Amoxicillin. One reason is that it destroys the gut friendly bacteria. So her taking probiotics and yogurt help in replenishing the bacteria and prevent the growth of harmful organisms. If the diarrhoea is severe, she should take an ORS solution to make up for the lost electrolytes. She can take porridges, shakes and foods that are not rich in fats and oils. Do get back to me if you have further queries.
