Hi,

Children generally do not need any medications for congestion and colds as they can have side effects that are worse than the cold symptoms. Just keep his nose suctioned out with a bulb before feedings and sleep and if the mucous is thick you may use nasal saline drops to loosen it before suction. Elevate the head of his bed and use a cool mist humidifier in his room when sleeping. See his doctor if he starts having fever over 38/101 or if it does not go away by the 10th day.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Emmette Clark, Pediatrician
