Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have cologinis colitis they are prescribing entocort ec 3mg/24h this is apparently the generic name, either way it is horribly expensive, without insurance the price is $1,600.00 even with my insurance it s still over $400.00 which for me is way too expensive. I spoke to another Doctor today and he said a good alternative might be Mesalamine which is much less expensive, however I also have kidney problems, my question is will the Mesalamine cause a further loss of kidney function?
Mesalamine is a drug of choice for Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) including Chrons Diasese and Ulcerative colitis. But you did not mention regarding which type of colitis you have. So my advise is if you are suffering from IBD,then definitely go for Mesealmine if there is no prior kidney disease. But watch for the dose and regulat titration according to response.
