Suggest Treatment For Congenital Hypothyroidism

hi
my name is shivalaya kanwar and i am living in shimla(hp) , india.
i had some questions about my younger sister who is suffering from Congenital Hypothyroidism ... due to lack of knowledge about this disorder the detection of Congenital Hypothyroidism in my sister came into light after 10 mnths of her birth.. from then we are attending regular hospital. but i dont think any change to condition to my sister has took place.
So i wish i could get a breif information about this disorder and what next steps can we take for her treatment.. as the detection of the disorder was late after like 10 months what should we do... just now we are giving medicines to her ..
atleast if you can give some directions or helf us so we can find a better treatment ..or u can guide us to some one who can tell us more about her treatment...

thanx alot.. waiting for you reply!!!

Hi,

Congenital hypothyroidism once detected should be treated properly. Since the diagnosis is late there will be some IQ defecits as brain development in 1st 10 months is affected. Think positive! We cannot correct past, so we will try to optimize the treatment now on so that maximum benefit is achieved.

Congenital hypothyroidism is a thyroid hormone deficiency. So we are going to replace the thyroid hormones. This could be life long replacement. You have to do a thyroid function tests (TFT) every 3-6 months and check if your TFT is normal. Once started on medications TFT should be normal there after. If it is not normal you should consult a physician who will increase or decrease the dose.

There is no alternative treatment for congenital hypothyroidism. Never stop the medications with out the doctors advice.

Hope I have answered your question. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.
