My 90 year old mother was started on cozaar for elevated BP by her cardiologist on June 15th. She has been have stomach and bowel issues since that time, not making it to the toilet on time. Is there something we can do to help this issue or will it get better with time? Thank you. She normally takes a couple Imodium afterwards, but she is s becoming very depressed about this, needing help cleaning up afterwards.

Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history about your 90 year old Mother, started on Cozaar for hypertension on 15 th June, she is having stomach and bowel issue since then, not making it to the toilet on time, wants to know what can be done to tackle this issue. She takes a couple of Imodium afterwards but becoming very depressed about this, needing help cleaning up afterward.
As per the history you have provided, your 90 year old Mother is having hypertension and under medication Cozaar which contains Losartan and the side effects related to diarrhea and not constipation.
Taking Imodium is not at all good in old age as it can cause alteration of the bowel habits that cannot be controlled well. Hence it is better to to avoid Imodium as it can cause constipation and hard stools, which can cause more problems.
Talk to your Cardiologist to change over to another medication and see if stoppage of Cozaar has helped or not.
