Suggest Treatment For Constipation Problem

I am on a 1200 calorie diet. Fruits, vegetables and tofu. And some fat-olive oil, coconut oil. As a vegetarian of 22yrs (10 of those vegan) it is not far from how I usually eat, except now I do not eat tons of home made bakery! I was 146.6 and now I am 139. I run (always have) 3x a week, and now weight lift 3x a week. Suddenly I am constipated. I want to eat the right amount of calories, not just a small number that may not actually appropriate. What is a good amount for me? I am 37 and 5'4".

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Well, it looks like there is some sudden change in your dietary habits that can be a most probable cause of Constipation. Other causes can be excess intake of dairy, taking a low fibre diet, lack of physical activity, stress, hypothyroidism, diabetes, irritable bowel syndrome, eating disorders etc. However it doesn't look serious in your case. For now you can take more of fibres like salads and green leafy vegetables in your diet. Take stool softener like Docusate. Drink plenty of water preferably warm. Avoid heavy and large meals. If it doesn't improve in 3-4 days consult an Emergency room and get a prescription of drug like Lubiprostone.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
