Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
i am 68 yrs old male having chronic constipation, diabetic, heartproblem, HAVING UNDERGONE TRIPLE BYPASS SURGERY IN1997,angioplasty done in venus&lima graft recently in july2011.sometimes i feel that my constipation problem is more life threatening than my heart problem.ihad undergone colostomy and subsequent closure for fecolith removal in 1986.even after this i do not defacate nomal.everyday i take some laxative inthe night and lukewarm water enema in the morning.many a times even this fails.what should i do ?
I understand your concerns and I will try to help you as much as I can. This may be r related to IBS and chronic constipation (spasms). That is particularly true when you consume foods like nuts or popcorn that would trigger spasms of the bowel.
I suggest running colonoscopy to exclude organic problems first. With regards to finding blood floating in the toilet after you pass the motion, that would be related to possible:
- fissures due to chronic constipation
- hemorrhoids.
In both cases, you need to take measures to reduce constipation that would trigger such problems:
- do more physical activity
- increase water consumption
- take more foods high in fiber content
- fiber supplements can help
- can use laxatives once in a while to improve the symptoms.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
