I have a sharp pain in the middle of my chest more towards the left side though... Right above my heart... I smoke and do cough alot!!! But today when i woke up i coughed and the pain was almost unbearable!!! When i cough it hurts really bad and then the pain lingers for a few seconds afterward i was wondering whats wrong with me and what should i do?
Thanks for your question on Health Care Magic. I can understand your concern. Sharp chest pain on coughing is commonly seen in pleurisy (inflammation of pleura). Common causes for pleurisy are infection, bronchitis etc. And both of these are common in smokers. So better to consult pulmonologist and get done clinical examination of respiratory system, chest x ray and PFT (Pulmonary Function Test). Chest x ray is needed to rule out lung infection. PFT is needed to rule out bronchitis. In any case smoking cessation is must. If all reports are normal than take painkiller and muscle relaxant drugs. But first rule out smoking related causes and quit smoking. Hope I have solved your query. Wish you good health. Thanks.
