Suggest Treatment For Cough In A 3 Years Old Child
My 3 year old had a cold which seems to have cleared but is suffering with excessive coughing and stuffy nose at night and wakes up crying because her nose is blocked. She is ok during the day but flares up at night. The coughing fits sound like a bark and she constantly needs water. We have been to the 24 walk in centre and have also been to see our gp. She was put on a course of antibiotics to clear a chest infection and an ear infection. The cough has been consistent for 3 weeks now and no one in our household have been able to have a decent nights sleep. What can this be?
I went through your daughter's history and if she is having this type of episode for the 1st time, I would firstly think of post-viral cough syndrome.
Sometimes, a viral infection is cured but symptoms of cough persist for a few weeks afterwards. This is not something to worry, but it can take time.
My opinion is to treat your daughter with montelukast and levocetirizine daily and use nasal saline drops/spray for blocked nose 3-4 times a day and before sleep. I would suggest her to avoid smoke and dust exposure.
If she responds to treatment, I would continue the medicines for 2 weeks. If she does not respond, an evaluation by pediatrician would be recommended.
Hope this will be helpful to you.
Wish your daughter a fast recovery and the best of the health.
