Suggest Treatment For Coughing Spells In A Bedridden Patient

I take care of an elderly man who has had a stroke several years ago and cannot swallow. He is fed by gtube. We have to suction his mouth as he produces saliva that he cannot swallow. He goes through spells of nonstop coughing. A girl that works here said there is a oral disc that one of her old patients used to take that helped with this. Do you know what that disc might be? That way we can ask our home health dr. about it?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

He may be developed aspiration pneumonia.

So he may need back rest or head end elevation, recheck for tube in the position or not? Give feeding of low volume with increased quantity.

You have to ask her what disc advised.

Weather he is having cervical disc protrusion and support, so she advised it.

No disks like to prevent aspiration.

Please consult your physician he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Take care.
