Hello, and I hope I can help you today.
A 2 cm
cyst is actually a common finding in any woman having an
ultrasound examination around the time of her menstrual cycle. Your ovary produces hormones to regulate your cycle, and assist develops each month that is gradually reabsorbed and replaced with another one when you ovulate. Furthermore, it is extremely difficult to tell the difference between an
endometrioma and a
hormonal cyst when the size is a small is yours. Ovarian cysts up to 4 cm can be produced by ovulation and your menstrual cycle alone.
So before considering any type of operation or treatment, it is likely that your doctor would just recommend repeating the ultrasound examination after one or two more menstrual cycles. If the cyst is still there and in the same place, the possibility of a growth like an endometrioma can be considered. However, if the cyst is gone, or decreasing in size, there is no need for any type of
surgical treatment.
Ovarian cysts that are due to ovulation are most usually treated with hormonal medications, like birth control pills or other similar drugs.
So in summary, it is extremely unlikely that surgery would be necessary for treatment of your ovarian cyst. Certainly, it would be at least a few months more of observation and repeat ultrasound, and possibly medical treatment with birth control pills would be attempted before considering any type of surgery.
I hope I was able to adequately answer your question today, and that my advice was helpful.
Best wishes,
Dr. Brown
