Hi Doctor, My mother 83 Years old having difficulties in sleeping, and started taking alzolam 0.25 mg nocte Noticed reduced interaction and sleeping as usual during daytime Does my need something only related to sleeping or to continue with current medication? Please let me advise benifits against side effects Peter William
You are concerned about sleeping problems with your mother. She is currently taking alprazolam which will cause daytime drowsiness. I use several other medications iin my practice that may help improve sleep without having the daytime fatigue. I recommend mirtazapine which is an antidepressant that has somnolence as a side effect and can be given at night before sleeping. This will allow for her to sleep and not have the following daytime somnolence. It may cause an increase in appetite but that is something that can be manageable.
