Thanks for contacting HCM You are concerned about sleeping problems with your mother. She is currently taking alprazolam which will cause daytime drowsiness. I use several other medications iin my practice that may help improve sleep without having the daytime fatigue. I recommend mirtazapine which is an antidepressant that has somnolence as a side effect and can be given at night before sleeping. This will allow for her to sleep and not have the following daytime somnolence. It may cause an increase in appetite but that is something that can be manageable. Another medication is trazodone which is another antidepressant but will not cause the daytime sleepiness . I hope this answers your question.
