Suggest Treatment For Dry Cough And Elevated Diaphragm
I m 70 years old and except for a dry cough for the last five months I m in good health. My Dr gave me an Rx for codeine, but it didn t help. He also did a chest x-ray but it didn t reveal anything except that the diaphragm was elevated on the right side. Dr. said it could be paralyzed, but offered no suggestions. My father died of lung cancer, but he was a heavy smoker for years. I ve never smoked at all drank or used drugs. I still have a cough, what should be my next step?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Elevated diaphragm with chronic cough may be possible with diaphragmatic irritation in sub diaphragmatic abscess or pleural effusion or lung collapse etc. Hepatitis may also cause diaphragmatic irritation. Use bronchodilator with cough suppressant. Also check for viral infections etc. Please consult your doctor he will do ultrasound abdomen and if needed CT chest and treat you accordingly.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
