My husband has developed a very dry hacking cough since had got the flu in late August this year. This cough is so constant and he has no mucous from this cough. It has persisted for the last 5 months and he has lost 10-12 pounds. What can be causing this? Help!
A chronic cough occurs may be due to: 1. Postnasal drip 2. Asthma 3. Gastroesophageal reflux disease 4. Chronic bronchitis; bronchiectasis 5. Treatment with ACE inhibitors
Less common causes are: 1. Airborn irritants 2. Aspiration 3. Pertusis 4. Lung cancer
Check for sinusitis, stop smoking, and stop exposure to allergen. Avoid cool drinks and freeze water. Do water vapor inhalation and salt water gargling thrice a day for five days.
If symptoms not improved, please consult your doctor, he/she will examine and treat you accordingly.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
