Suggest Treatment For Elevated Cholesterol Levels

Hi, I have elevated levels of Cholestrol and Triglycerides. I had done tests on 08June10 wherein Cholestrol was 207 and Triglycerides were 256. I started walking half an hour everyday morning and also cut down on Non veg and oil. I did a test again on 11July10 and cholestrol was 199 and Triglycerides is 193 but the ratios are still a bit higher. Please suggest

Good morning,
Yes, it is good that you came to HCM for some ideas. Triglycerides can be lowered by* cutting out sugar,*eliminate simple carbohydrates (soda, juice) and *eating more soluble fiber (oats - oatmeal, oatbread, oat cereal) and *substituting meat meals as much as possible with legumes (chili with soy crumbles, 3 bean salad, not green beans here). If you use oil,* use virgin olive oil to make own dressings and to saute', you cannot fry with it and frankly, no fried foods should be consumed.* Canola oil should be used for baking or cooking at high heat.*Fruits may elevate triglycerides, so if consumed it should be eaten in moderation and no juice.

Your goal for triglycerides is less than 150 and I think you can do it with a few more changes. Continue to walk, but pick up the pace a bit and try to walk 40 minutes a day. You want to be walking fast enough that you feel it but not so fast you can't carry on a conversation.

Those are my suggestions right now. Please write back after your next blood draw and let me know how things are going - put my name at the top of query so I get it. Thank you for coming to HCM. Kathryn Shattler, MS,RDN
