Suggest Treatment For Epilepsy

My son 19 years old is on Levipill 500 and Oxtrol 300 twice a day since January 14th, 2014 for two seizures he had at 15 and 18 years of age, is studying in a hostel away from home. He has to wake up in the night until 12am and get up in the morning at 7 am. Can he continue this situation for two years more until he completes his engineering degree or he needs special care staying togather with the family. He looks too skinny and week. Waiting for your advise sir. Thanks

Hello:

Your son needs to keep taking the medication; it will help to control epilepsy. If he can, he needs to sleep well, avoid alcohol, fasting, and stressful situations. This is not always possible for people living alone.

Levetiracetam and Oxcarbazepine are good options for epilepsy treatment. If he is still having seizures, he can increase the dose of both. If not tolerated, he has option for other medications, as lamotrgine, valproic acid, clonazepam, pregabalin or topiramate.

Most of the people with epilepsy can have a normal healthy life. I suggest to your son informing some people of trust around him (e.g. roommates, friends, girlfriend, teachers, coworkers, etc.) about his condition, so they can learn how to act and react if he has a seizure. Look for and consult with a neurologist near the place he is living and let the doctor know about the situation. Get him a stock of medication so he will not run out of them. And maintain regular communication with your son and his doctor.

I hope this helps you and your son. If there is something else I can help you with, or if you have any doubt, please let me know.
