Hi, my girlfriend suffers from erythema multiforma and has previously been prescribed fexofenadine for her rash. She has stopped taking fexofenadine on advice from the doctor and we were wondering whether any over the counter antihistamine s would be as effective is keeping it at bay?
Hi, first we should find out the cause of erythema multiforme. most commo0nly it occurs secondary to herpes simplex infection so that should be treated along with it. Apart from herpes EM can be secondary to some drug intake. So EM can be fully treated only along treatment of its cause. Topical calamine lotion and topical steroid along with oral antihistamines are effective in controlling the present episode. For severe cases oral steroids are required. so dont just take over the counter antihistamine that would only give a temporary relief... consult a dermatologist and get its treatment based on the cause so that it wont recur... Hope the post is helpful to you..
