Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My 5 year old child who was born and brought up in UK has now moved to India. He has been there for only 6 months and in that short period of time has had 7 courses of antibiotics for recurrent URTI and gastrointestinal infections. He keeps getting recurrent URTIs. Is there anything we can do to help him cope with the local setting which is obviously lot more polluted than the one in UK? How best can we improve his immunity to local infections? He has had all his primary and booster vaccinations for his age. Please advise. Vidyadhar Ishwar
It's not wise to give your child antibiotics for every episode of infection which may not have been caused by bacteria in the first place. Many infections are viral and do not need antibiotics.
To boost your child's immunity, I would suggest that you make it a habit to feed him a well balanced diet that includes fresh fruits and vegetables. Make sure he gets a lot of physical exercise. Also I would advise against sudden changes in temperature that are brought about by always remaining in an airconditioned environment and then suddenly going out of the house or drinking chilled water.
Lastly, please consult an ENT surgeon to make sure he does not have tonsillitis - which is the commonest cause for children in this age group to fall sick repeatedly.
I hope I have answered your question. Please feel free to get back to me in case you have any more doubts.
