Suggest Treatment For Graves Disease

Asslamo-alekum! My father, aged 65 years, has been diagnosed as the patient of Gravesâ?? Disease. He is very week and under weight (41 Kgs. , Height 5 feet and 5 inch). We have come to know about it today afternoon.

A senior doctor (M.D.), at Holy Family Hospital, New Delhi, India has diagnosing him for last 15 days. After a number of blood tests and urine test, basically for TSH, T3, T4, Urea, Blood Countâ?¦.to name a few and also after the Endocrine Thyroid Scan, it has been found that my father is suffering from Gravesâ?? Disease. He has been prescribed now 3 tabs. of Carbimazole 10 mg. per day and 1 cap. of Indural at bed time.

We would like to know if he has been given the correct medicine or do we have to consult any specialist in Graveâ??s Disease. Please tell us few specialists in Delhi. Also suggest what is the diet plan for this disease.

Thank you,

Allah Hafiz!

Hello. Thanks for asking on Healthcaremagic. Graves disease is an autoimmune disease of the thyroid where the auto antibodies bind and cause continued stimulation of the gland to produce excessive hormones. Carbimazole is an antithyroid drug which causes decrease in thyroid hormone synthesis. Inderal contains a beta blocker and is given to control palpitations and other cardiac side effects of high thyroid hormones circulating in the body. However in case long term benefit is not achieved with anti thyroid drugs you can consult the doctor for radio active iodine treatment which works by destroying the thyroid parenchyma. However eventual hypothyroidism is a side effect of radio active iodine. In cases where drugs are not effective or not tolerated surgery might be done. Key to the treatment is to monitor the thyroid hormone levels in blood by regular tests and bring them within normal range with treatment. Hope I helped you out. Thanks.
