Suggest Treatment For Hacking Cough Leading To Loss Of Voice For Some Time

Hi. I have had a chronic, dry cough for over one month. After two weeks, i went in to my MD who listened to my chest, determined it was not in my lungs or bronchi, and prescribed an anti-biotic. After ten days I had no relief. I went back, we did some chest x-rays, a CT scan and I was put on Prednisone for nine days. Again, no relief. I do Not feel sick. Nothing seems to be blocking my breathing and I do not get short of breath. There is a scratchiness in the back of my throat and if I try to clear it, I have a severe, hacking cough that stops me in my tracks and often I will loose my voice for some seconds. Any ideas?

ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hi, Since there is no airway blockade and radiological evaluation normal you are not in dangerous side.
The condition is called as Chronic laryngitis- are you a smoker? Do you have any reflux esophagitis issues?
The steroid in tapering dose you already tried. I advice you to do plain steam inhalation. Proper food habits , avoid overeating, do regular physical activities. Even after that if you have symptom meet the ENT surgeon for video laryngoscopy and if needed micro laryngeal examination to rule out laryngeal TB/ Malignancy too. take care
