Suggest Treatment For Hearing Loss In The Left Ear After A Surgery

My one ear was operated, left. May be it was cholestatoma. Right ear also being suggested to get operated by a doctor. CT scan suggests soft tissues in the right middle ear. But the inner ears of both ear are normal. But puretone audiometry suggests sensonural hearing loss in high frequency in the RIGHT ear. The AB gap isn t more than 10. And the graph goes down in high frequency. I am confused whether its sensory problem or conductive. Whether I should undergo the surgery or not . I can t hear with my left ear. The ear ossicles are damamged as per the CT scan suggests as it was earlier operated. SHOULD I UNDERGO OPERATION ? Is there any means to restore hearing if I loss it during this surgery? Hearing aids? Since this is my only hearing ear I am hesitating to undergo surgery.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It is possible that sensorineural hearing loss in 5% cholesteatoma cases. Possible causes are :
1.Contribution of the middle ear and ossicles to hearing mechanism by bone conduction.
2. Cochlear dysfunction resulting from extension of inflammation in the middle ear cleft through the round window (RW) membrane.
3. Use of ototoxic ear drops in non-intact tympanic membrane or use of systemic ototoxic drugs.

Until examination is done it is difficult to say what it is.

Also check other possible causes for sensoneural hearing loss due to nerve degeneration or weakness etc.

Please consult your ENT specialist he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Take care.
