HI,
eGFR lowers with aging but other conditions can make it worse such as
diabetes,
high blood pressure,
high cholesterol and some medications. She needs to prevent progression, this means controlling any risk factors that would worsen her kidneys, controlling her blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol
Her doctor would review any meds she may be taking that could potentially affect the kidneys or could be affected by poor kidney function. It is also important to make sure that she drinks an adequate amount of fluid, some elevation of the urea/bun, may be related to fluid status
In terms of diet, it may be best to speak to a dietician to get advice specific to your mum but in general- use a low salt diet, may also need to reduce protein intake as well, as well as a reduction in foods with high levels of potassium and phosphorus. The calcium is fine.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson, General & Family Physician
