Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Recently my resting heart rate, which is normally between 68-77, increased to 90-105. I saw my Dr. and he gave me an EKG. The EKG came back as normal but my heart rate was higher than normal at 86. My blood pressure which is normally 120/70 was taken by the Dr and was 140/90. This is an increase in just a few months. After the Dr. my heart rate returned to normal and I felt OK. I am a stressed person recently and do have anxiety disorder so I assume hearing from the doctor that I was OK eased my stress and returned my BPM to normal. I am now fighting a terrible cold and it has once again gone to 105 BPM resting. I am taking Zyrtec and Alka-Seltzer Cold and Flu. Can this be the reason for the increase again along with stress? I have no other symptoms besides the high BPM. I am going to a cardiologist in a few days just as a safety precaution. Anything to help ease my nerves or worry can only help. FYI...I had full blood work done and all results were perfect except a slight elevation in triglycerides (sp?) but was below an alarming number. Thank you
Hello welcome to HCM. I have read your question and understand your concerns. Usually normal resting heart rate should be within 60-80per min but in some people it can be upto 100per min also normally. Higher resting heart rate can be found normally in anxietyneurosis, infection, with drugs or in hyperthyroidism(high thyroid levels).
At present your increase heart rate Is due to infection. It's usual finding in infection /cold. So, don't worry about it.
Blood pressure should remain less then 140/90 mmhg. Treatment is not required unless persistent blood pressure is more than that. So, at present you don't need to worry regarding both and no treatment is required except you reduce your stress.
Your doctor might advice you holter (24 hrs ecg monitoring) to rule out any significant problem for persistent high heart rate. But I don't think you have any significant problem. Thank you. Have a nice day.
