Suggest Treatment For High Triglycerides

Hi, I have a concern with some blood test results that my sister recently had taken. Her Triglyceride is 343 & the normal range should be below 160. The VLDL is 68.60 & normal range is 6.00 - 40.00. She does take a cholesterol medication but its obviously not working enough. I feel this is very dangerous to ignore. Please advise your opinion on this matter. Thanks, very much for your help.

Hi. Thank you for contacting me via HCM.

Triglyceride levels tend to be false positive sometimes, especially when the blood test is taken within 8-16 hours after the last meal. Therefore, I would suggest that this test be repeated after a 16-hour fasting period. If the levels are still high, then my opinion is to start a fibric acid derivative to the therapy (e.g. fenofibrat 160 mg x 1 tb/d). Also, diet and lifestyle adjustment would be appropriate. I would recommend a diet with low salt, rich in fibres (green leafy vegetables and fruit) and a 60 minute physical activity per day (e.g. walking, visiting a swimming pool).

I hope I was helpful. Take care.
