Suggest Treatment For Hoarse Voice While Suffering From Cold

I have had a head cold for 4-5 weeks, but today it is better. However for the last week or so I have had a bad case of hoarseness in my vocal chords. My voice doesn t sound like me. It is very rough, hoarse, and my speech sounds low and nasal. I have tried the old home remedy of gargling with hot salt water this week, got a slight improvement. Should I continue with this salt water gargling? or is there a medication I should buy? Note: I use the Breo Ellipta Inhaler for COPD completing 15 inhalations thus far, if that is relevant to vocal chord change I am not sure. Your views?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It looks like Laryngitis that is an inflammation of the vocal cords due to infection of the throat secondary to cold..
Yes, you should take medicine.
So first of all consult an Emergency room and get evaluated and a throat swab culture can help in diagnosis..
You can be advised a course of antibiotics like Azithromycin and anti inflammatory painkillers like Advil.
Also continue gargling with warm salt water and antiseptic mouthwash.
Such Cepacol lozenges.
Drink warm water and avoid spicy foods.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Honey Arora
