Hi,I am Neethu Vipin (Dietitian & Nutritionist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am a 5'4", 122 lb. 49 year old recently diagnosed with hypercalcemia. I am also taking vitamin d due to a low vitamin d level. My doctor is trying to control the hypercalcemia with my diet. Bloodwork since being on a dairy-free diet reveals a normal calcium level, lower vitamin d (dosage was increased) and parathyroid is normal. Any suggestions?
The vitamin D supplements could have caused the hypercalcemia. You mentioned that a dairy-free diet has normalized your calcium level. If the calcium restriction is working I would continue with that until you are repleted with D and the doctor can lower the D dose again for maintenance. You may then be able to add dairy back into your diet without the hypercalcemia. High blood calcium can form plaques in your arteries just like cholesterol. It can also be responsible for kidney stones so everything in balance. . .
