Suggest Treatment For Hyperthyroidism

My husband has been treated for almost a year for hyper-thyroid, ended up with afib and it is not in control yet. He has reverted, but he still does not feel great. Lots of episodes of profuse sweating, being tired, no appetite on occasion. Not himself. He is taking 5 mg of methimozole now. Sometimes he becomes hypo and has to stop his medication. I am wondering how long it usually takes. I am thinking of getting a second opinion.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

In hyperthyroidism thyroid gland becomes overactive and makes too much thyroid hormone. Variety of diseases such as immune system disorders and endocrine system disorders may cause overactive thyroid along with thyroid gland disorders. High thyroid hormone levels in the body may cause rapid heartbeat, atrial fibrillation, profuse sweating, weight loss anxiety and tiredness. Treatment depends on an exact cause of hyperthyroidism.
Methimazole is an antithyroid medicine that used to treat mostly Graves' disease or toxic nodular goiter. If methimazole fails to control thyroid hormone levels, I usually advise my patients radioactive iodine ablation therapy. It is a permanent treatment option in which radioactive iodine is given to a patient and thyroid gland absorbs the iodine. Radioactive iodine will damage thyroid gland and suppress thyroid hormone production. It may cause side effects if too much thyroid cells get damaged causing hypothyroidism.
Please, consult with your doctor about iodine ablation therapy.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
