Suggest Treatment For Hypoparathyroidism

Hi I have hypoparathyroidism and hypocalcemia. I take calcitriol and calcium supplements daily. I recently started to taking 10 mg Amlodipine daily for hypertension and have been feeling low calcium symptoms as well as having ingestion issues. Can amolodipine be causing this?

Brief Answer:
You may use another blood pressure lowering drug instead of amlodipine.
You should check your calcium level in blood.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for using HCM.
Calcium tablets is better not to be taken with amlodipine because they may interfere with each other and alter each other's potency. While amlodipine blocks calcium, calcium supplements increase the amount of calcium present in the body. This can cause calcium to be channeled incorrectly, which can reduce your overall blood pressure dramatically. Reduced blood pressure, or hypotension, will cause you to feel light headed and can cause you to faint. This effect is more prominent while taking iv calcium.
As the calcium supplements are indispensable for you, you should discuss with your treating doctor to utilize another drug for lowering blood pressure.
For example: calcium supplements don't appear to interact with other commonly prescribed blood pressure medications, such as:
- Beta blockers bisoprolol (Zebeta), propranolol (Inderal, Innopran XL), etc
- Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, such as captopril (Capoten), lisinopril (Prinivil, Zestril), etc
- Angiotensin II receptor blockers, such as losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), etc
- Renin inhibitors, such as aliskiren (Tekturna)
Even though you should discuss this with your treating doctor.
Meanwhile another check of the calcium levels in blood should be done.

Hope this is helpful.
