i have a hypothyroid problem. and iam 27 years old .iam taking eltroxin tablets. During my recent health check up i was informed that i have PCOD. due to that my periods are irregular.can u plz suggest me how to regularise my periods and the right diet to lose my weight and live healthier .
Thanks for visiting Healthcare Magic. I have read you question completely and understand your concerns.
Weight gain and irregular periods can be both due to hypothyroidism (if not adequately controlled) and PCOD. I hope your hypothyroidism is well controlled and your TSH is in normal range, if not can you kindly consult your doctor (as I am not sure what dose of Thyroxine tablet you are taking).
Regarding weight loss, i would advise you to eat a healthy diet, well balanced. Take at least half portion of your plate with vegetables. This is high fiber, but with negligible calories, hence will keep you full and thus you will be not consuming more carbohydrates or fats (which are the two main culprits for weight gain). Take at least 1/4 portion of your plate to be with carbohydrates, and and the other 1/4 to be of proteins. Your fats should be not more than 10% of your diet. Take at least 3-4 serving of fruits, a glass of milk, curd/yoghurt/buttermilk. Restrict or avoid high calorie food like food filled with lots of fats, cheese, butter, sugar - cakes, chocolates, deep fried food items, chips etc.
Please take your thyroid tablet in the morning on empty stomach and take the high fiber food only after 3-4 hours so that it does not impair the absorption of the thyroid tablet.
Regarding irregular periods, weight loss would definitely help with your periods. Alternatively, you try a hormonal contraceptive pills with both estrogen and progesterone (For e.g. Microgynon 1 tablet for 3 weeks and then one week pill fee) for about 6 months to regularise your period. This is a prescription only medication and needs to be issued to you by your doctor after taking a through history of you (as there are some contraindications where it should not be prescribed). So kindly see your gynaecologist or family doctor for this.
I hope i have answered all your queries.
