Hi. Thank for your query and an elucidate history related to the Umbilical Hernia post operative infection.
I would advise in such a situation the following: Since this is an infected condition and mesh might have been put in, Sometimes I would like to put a suction drainage tube to reduce the pus and bacterial load and may be clean multiple times with normal saline ot get the infection under control. Broad spectrum antibiotics help a lot. I would repeat the ultrasound, aspirate the area under ultrasonography guidance and send the sample for gram staining, culture and sensitivity examination . This settles the problem in most of the times and healing would be perfect. I may have to keep the option of removal of the mesh if the infection does not come under control in 3 weeks time.
I hope this answer helps you and your husband to have a proper guideline of recovery from an infected umbilical hernia.
Take care.
