Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
gallbladder was infected, fused to intestines during surgery it had to be patched and stiched. 2nd surgery due to 2 golf ball size stones found lodged in bowels. 3rd surgery due to old blood pooling around the incision and infected, now old blood pooling around the opposite side and infected. Incerted a drain tube on that side but a 4th surgery might be necessary because the old blood is so thick. white blood count is down to 14 but still in ICU. Has a tube in the fistula said this is the lifeline and hopes it will heal around the tube so it can be taken out in a few months. Does all this sound normal?
Hi and welcome to Healthcaremagic. Thank you for your query. I am Dr. Rommstein and I will try to help you as much as I can.
This is not unusual complication of gallbladder infection. We see such cases often and this decision of doctor is good if you ask me. Any additional surgery would be risky due to fibrosis and inflammatory changes inside abdominal cavity. Such huge stones caused severe inflammation and destruction of bile ducts and duodenum and the best way to treat this is to drain it externali and wait till tissue heals and stabilize. This is called controlled fistula and it will close spontaneously eventually.
I hope I have answered you query. If you have any further questions you can contact us. Kindly regards. Wish you a good health.
