Suggest Treatment For Itchy Skin On Back During Pregnancy

I am 20 weeks pregnant with itchy skin mainly on my back and upper arms which is worse at night and if the skin gets hot. It developed at about 8 weeks and if I scratch it I m left with welts that stay for about 10 minutes and then fade. I did mention it to my midwife but she did not know what the symptoms could be caused by. Do you have any suggestions? Many thanks Lucy

Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

Pregnancy is a time when your skin is much more sensitive than usual, and skin conditions may flare up in ways they never did before.

I cannot say what type of condition is causing you to itch, but I can tell you that the bumps forming where you scratch are called dermatographia, which is literally an allergic reaction by your skin to scratching. This means most likely your skin is having a reaction to something in your environment.

Pregnant women can develop skin allergies during pregnancy to all sorts of things- the soap or laundry detergent they use... nylon lace in bras... wool... The list can be extensive. So perhaps look into the products you use in the household and change to perfume and dye free products. I would use oatmeal bath products as they are soothing to the skin. And applying 1% hydrocortisione cream (which is available over-the-counter) to the itchy areas will help to prevent the welts from forming.

If you develop any rash without scratching, a consultation by a dermatologist may be warranted.

I hope I was able to answer your question and that my advice was helpful.

Best wishes, Dr. Brown
