Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
About a week ago I felt an ache in the back of knee and discovered a burst blood vessel and a large purple patch. Today the same thing has happened to the other knee . Am worried i have a circulation problem in my leg should I see my Doctor. Have been walking a fair amount lately - could that be the cause ? Am fit but early 50 s female.
If you felt an ache on the back of your knee you might be experiencing some type of venous insufficiency. If your veins have some type of insufficiency in their valves, they won't be able to pump back the blood flow. Thus, your blood will collect, and pressure will build up. This can eventually cause small peripheral veins to burst.
My suggestion is to do a US scan to confirm this diagnosis. A simple solution until you do your US scan is to use pressurized leggings. These tight socks will keep your veins compressed, and won't allow pressure to build in your veins. This will avoid your smaller fragile veins from bursting again.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Gonzalo Escobar, Orthopedic Surgeon
