Suggest Treatment For Line And Dark Bruising On Toe Post Injury
Hi, I broke my great toe (left foot) about a week ago. They put me in a plaster cast and Im going to see an orthopaedic surgeon tomorrow as the ER physician asked me to do. The toe had a line that isn t supposed to be there according to him and furthermore yep, it s busted he proclaimed. It looks straight to me (I dropped a steel plate on it). The pain is almost fully gone but there is slight dark bruising.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement, Dr. Saurabh Gupta's Response
Hello, Thanks for your query. The dark bruising on toe is suggestive of a hematoma formation either due to a soft tissue injury or due to a hairline fracture. 1. Do a cold compress on the area of injury. 2. Avoid weight bearing on the foot. 3. Keep the foot elevated on two pillows while resting. 4. Get some mild pain killers prescribed from your doctor. Rest assured it will subside in a week or more. But if you have persistent pain and increase in swelling, please go ahead and confirm the diagnosis with CT scan or X-ray. The only precaution that you must keep in mind is that it should not get infected (from any other source in body), cause if it does it will turn into an abscess. Even if there is a fracture, all you have to do now is to allow it to rest and avoid weight bearing on the foot I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query. Take care
