Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My husband has recently been diagnosed with Alcoholic cirrhosis of liver with ascites. The doctor said it was at stage 4. Earlier this week he had the fluid trained from his abdomen which was only about a liter. He has lost 20 pounds in a week which is fluid and probably because he has not been drinking alcohol and the meds they gave him to get rid of the fluid. How long does a person usually live with this diagnosis
This is very serious disease and quitting alcohol is the most important thing that should be done. Also, medications which are hematotoxic should be avoided. This is necessary to prevent disease progression which is lethal in most cases. At early stages it can be treated with these measures but but in case of progression, only liver transplantation may help.It is hard to progones anything since it depends on his general health and other factors but all in all, prognosis is poor if ascites already developed.
Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.
Wishing you good health.
