Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Is he having any fever? Does the stool contain any blood/mucus? Most of the gastroenteritis in children are viral, and need no antibiotics. It just needs adequate intake of fluids like ORS to prevent dehydration. Also, giving zinc and a probiotic might hasten recovery.

Antibiotics are needed only when we suspect bacterial dysentery- here there will be fever, abdominal pain and the stool may contain mucus or blood. Even if needed, I do not recommend combination antibiotics like NORMET. Rather I used to give antibiotics like Cefixime unless there is lab evidence of amoebic dysentery. Your doctor will guide you.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
