Hi there,

I'm sorry that this patient is having these issues. The most common cause of fluid buildup in the abdomen in a cirrhotic is ascites, which has several ways of being treated. First of all, I'd recommend a low sodium diet, and this patient should started on some diuretics (water pills) such as lasix (furesomide) and spironolactone (aldactone). Second, if the abdomen is very tight, and this patient can't eat, they likely need a paracentesis, which is removal of fluid from the abdomen with a needle. Some cirrhotics will respond to medical management with the medications and diet I mentioned above, but some others need regular paracentesis. It really depends on the degree of cirrhosis, which is difficult to determine with the limited information here.

I would really recommend this patient see a hematologist (a liver specialist) as this a is a difficult condition to treat and requires a doctor with experience with it.

I hope this answers your question. Please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions.
