Suggest Treatment For Loss Of Sensing Smell After Bronchitis Treatment
I had a very bad case of bronchitis last year and after I recovered from the ailment I have lost my sense of smell. I can taste a few things...especially lemon and coconut but can t smell bacon cooking or cookies baking. Has anyone out there had a patient and what was the outcome?
Hi. Thanks for your query. Anosmia as is this called- the loss of sensation after an attack of bronchitis is very rare but can occur. This may be due to the following reason. During the attack of the Bronchitis there must have been a severe sinusitis and rhinitis. Upon the recovery phase the mucosa must have got altered with destruction of the nerve endings with resultant loss of sensation of smell.
I would advise you the following: Consult an ENT surgeon, undergo ENT endoscopy, CT scan of the nose and sinuses, clinical evaluation by a Neurologist for sensory loss and see whether this is treatable or not.
