Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Yes--- I had a blood work done and found my sodium level is 125--should be at least 135-- and had a urinary tract infection, being that I was a little off balance but thats ok now---went to the ER-- My doctor is weaning off sertraline---he found that could be the cause- I do drink a lot---heard that may bee too much--I am drinking the POWERADE ELETROLITE DRINKS --Is that ok--and how much of anything should I be drinking--I also am taking atenolol and lisinoprol for Blood pressure-could any be causing low sodium--Please advise---I am a wreck and still tired---I am a little nervous--thank YYYY@YYYY
I think your doctor is doing right thing while weaning off sertraline as it is well known cause of hyponateremia (low sodium) especially in elderly population. I am not sure about your age but if you are above 60 and require antidepressant it will be right to ask for sodium sparing medications such as tolvaptan.
I am also of the opinion that increasing salt intake to certain level may help you provided there are no contraindications.
Helllo , thank you for your question . It is actually not that bad . Low sodium levels can be due to large amounts of water intake and the urinary infection you mentioned . Another cause can be excessive sweating and if you are an a low sodium diet . You will probably get better you just add some more salt to the diet . It is okey to take elecrolite drinks. You didnt sais how much water you drink , but dont lower it under 1.5 litre . Control your blood preassure while on high salt diet . There is no need to change your high blood pressure medication . Hope you get better .
