My husband had a mole removed that came back melanoma. They took more skin out the second time. They say it is contained in the mole. He was told to get a cat scan or Chest x-ray. We do not have a family Dr. at this time. Who do we see? A Oncologist, or family Dr?. Our Dermatology Dr. was the one that said to get checked out to make sure everything is okay.
You should definitely see an oncologist. A melanoma is a type of cancer that arises from the pigment containing cells of the skin. It usually spreads that is why the dermatologist removed the normal skin margin as well in the second session and this is why he advises a Chest X Ray etc. Melanomas should be treated with a multidisciplinary approach which means that a team of doctors from different specialties should be treating it. I would suggest that you see an oncologist as early as possible.
