Went in for 20 week u/s and found out I am having a girl. Then the doctor told me that she has mild pelviectasis, but didnt seem worried at all. She said I would go back in 4 weeks to check on it but everything else seemed normal. Of course I came home and looked it up, and am seeing a lot of information about Down Syndrome associated with this. Is this true?! And I also saw that it is more common in boys, and so does that mean my little girl is more likely for problems.
Pelviectasis is caused by obstruction of urine flow from kidney to the bladder or back flow of urine from bladder.
Pelviectasis is found in 1% of normal pregnancies. Presense of pelviectasis solely doesn't mean your girl has any problem that has to be taken care of immediately. It requires serial ultrasonography to monitor the size of renal pelvis, kidneys and ureters to assess any damage if there is any.
Babies with down's syndrome usually have higher rate of urinary tract abnormalities in comparison with normal babies. Pelviectasis in isolation is not a marker of down's syndrome.
