hi my 5 year old daughter just had a coughing fit which lasted a good 5 minutes (after intermittent coughing on and off for 20 mins) when the coughing stopped - after spending 10 mins in a steamy room she had a small amount of blood in her left nostril, please can you advise a cause - she is now fast asleep

I can understand your concern.
By your history and description, we should definitely rule out lung and nose related diseases.
So better to consult pediatrician and get done clinical examination of respiratory system, chest x ray and x ray of paranasal sinuses.
If she is having nasal polyps or mass then surgical removal is needed.
So better not to wait at home and take her to pediatrician.
