This is an atypical presentation of the problems you mentioned namely,
wheezing on trying to sleep and pain in throat or
esophagus as I could get from the history you have provided.
The medication for such a problem needs a proper clinical evaluation, examination and investigations by his Doctor.
Clinically auscultation is necessary to know whether this problem is due to respiratory problems like
asthma or so.
ENT
Endoscopy can help to know the problem in the throat.
Once diagnosed properly, he can be treated with prescription based medications.
Also needed is a PPI like
Omeprazole and such things that can relieve the pain other symptoms.
ALso look for the instigating or enhancing factors which need to be avoided strictly.
