Hi,
First of all, swelling in the knee can be due to your primary
injury (related to it) so we need to confirm that you don't have any underlying pathology inside your knee.
So I advise you to do an
MRI for your knee if you don't have a contraindication for doing it (e.g. metal in your body, pacemaker... etc.)
Then for the acute term management, you can use:
- ice (packs for 10 minutes over your knee 3-4 times daily)
- take a rest for 1-2 weeks with an elevation of ur leg over 1-2 pillows.
You can use something called hinged
knee brace (a brace that restrict motion over the knee in certain directions so to lessen the
stress over your knee). Some anti-inflammatory medications can be of help but beware of their side effects and contraindications (consult your doctor first.)
Avoid going up and down stairs for the upcoming week. After all of that watch for improvement of your knee (I advise that you take a picture for your knee before and after 1 week from the steps I illustrated above.)
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Ala' Hawa,
