Suggest Treatment For Pain In Arm Caused After Heavy Lifting

Hi, I do a lot of heavy lifting at work and I recently developed a pain in my arm. I had felt it before after throwing a few times or even just once really hard and the pain would usually subside in about 30-45 minutes with some rest. Unfortunately the pain is back, I suppose from work. After doing some research I believe it is radial nerve pain with tenderness on the outside of my elbow. The problem is I can t find any information on the area I m feeling the pain which is, for the most part, at and around my triceps and the lateral epicondyle during torsional and swinging motions. i.e. swinging a tire onto a stack of tires. A few minutes of nerve gliding exercise and some alieve helped a bit but its recurring. When it s at its worst I have a hard time extending my arm and cannot move it as deftly and the pain saps strength from my arm. A lot like some radial neuropathy or palsy. Any tips for exercises/stretches? Or ANYTHING nonsurgical?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for your query.
It seems that you have suffered a sprain of the triceps muscles during the workout. Such minor sprains usually take 7-10 days to resolve.

1. Give enough rest to your arm muscle. Avoid workouts and lifting weights with the arm till acute pain subsides completely.
2. Take mild pain killers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen.
3. Stronger prescription NSAIDS with muscle relaxants may help if simple analgesics do not help. You can consult your orthopedician for prescriptions.
4. Hot compresses to your arm will be useful pain relieving measure. You may apply a local analgesic gel on that area.
This should slowly subside with hot fomentation and proper relaxation.

In case, It does not subside on its own or it is associated with severe pain, and swelling around the area, it could indicate a tear of one of the muscle fibres.

I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query.
Take care
