I have a perforated nasal septum. I think it is about 6mm. I ve seen an ent and he has suggested leaving it alone. It is troublesome, with varying symptoms every day : dryness, stuffiness, runny nose, post-nasal drip, mild stinging, tingling sensation on outside of my nose. I use naseptin daily with some vaselins smeared just inside my nostril. The hole came about following a bad cycling accident and subsequent crusting up which I tended to pick to clear my nose. I do not touch it now with my fingers. I ve been aware of the hole for several months. Is it likely to get bigger? Would surgery be a viable option?
hi...dont worry. this septal perforation wont get bigger by itself unless you are suffering from granulomatous diseases like tuberculosis, leprosy, syphillis etc... just try to avoid repeated trauma to nose and don't do nose picking...when you go out or drive juts start using nasal obturators available in markets to avoid drying effect of inspiratory air currents. you can also wear mask and avoid dusty and smoky environment. secondly you can use normal saline nose drops (nasoclear) three to four times a day or Solspre to provide humidification to nasal mucosa and prevent surgery. if the size of perforation is less than 1 cm better avoid surgery. however, if you want to have it you can go for it as it is only a minor procedure.no risks involved.
