Suggest Treatment For Persistent Cough

I have had a persistent cough, on and off, for about 4 years. Chest x-rays show a clear chest. As part of an investigation to find the cause, I have just been diagnosed with mucosal thickening of the floor of the maxillary sinus bilaterally. I don't have any symptoms of sinusitis. What could this mean and could this be the cause of persistent coughing?

Hello,

Thank you for asking at HCM.

I went through your history and would like to make suggestions for you as follows:

1. Mucosal thickening in maxillary sinus floor, especially if thickness is more than 4 mm, it suggests chronic sinusitis. However, it is important to know more about your symptoms like nature of cough, nose obstruction, post-nasal drip, regurgitation after meals, other nose symptoms, headaches, any allergies, any fever, etc before making a diagnosis.

2. If it is chronic sinusitis, it can cause chronic cough.

3. Were I treating you, I would ask your symptoms in great details, then only I would plan your treatment.

4. At present, I would suggest you regular steam inhalation, warm saline gargles and an antihistamine like levocetirizine/fexofenadine which helps in cough and chronic sinusitis.

5. Once diagnosis of sinusitis is final, further investigations like allergy testing and treatments like intranasal corticosteroids, antibiotics, etc can be suggested.

Hope above suggestions will be helpful to you.

Should you have any further query, please feel free to ask at HCM.

Wish you the best of the health ahead.

Thank you & Regards.
