Suggest Treatment For Radiating Headache

I have one sided headache very often. The pain starts from the muscle right above the ear in the scalp which is very tender and tense. The pain then radiates to the eye socket and stays for hours .What is the best treatment other than taking painkiller frequently?

Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

Your headaches are compatible with tension type headache. But the unilateral location in the half of the head raises suspicions of possible migraine or a brain lesion.

I would recommend consulting with a neurologist for a careful physical exam and a brain MRI.

If these tests result normal, you should discuss with your doctor the possibility of starting a preventive therapy, like an antidepressant (amytriptiline or a SSRI class drug).

Hope to have been helpful!
Best wishes,
Dr. Aida
