I believe I have shingles. The rash appears only on my left hip. At first I thought I had the flu--achy all over. Then about five days ago I felt like I got kicked by horse in hip. The area was sore and tender. When I looked in the mirror, I saw the rash. I was prescribed valacyclovir two days ago to be used for seven days, and now there is hardly any discomfort. The rash is still there, but seems to be subsiding. My questions are--How long can I expect the rash to last? Are there any topical treatments for the rash? Is there anything else I should be doing? Once this episode subsides, what are the chances of shingle recurring? Thank you.
Hello Thanks for the query. You can use a topical antibiotic cream like mupirocine twice daily for a week. It might take a week for complete recovery. Try to avoid stress as stress might lead to recurrence. Let me know if you have any other doubts. Thanks.
